The Challenge.

Climate change has brought more extreme weather patterns to California, leading to multi-year droughts across the state. It’s more important than ever for residents and businesses to find new ways to conserve water. The main priority was to encourage residents and businesses to decrease water usage for outdoor use. Reduction of water in indoor settings was the secondary priority.

Our Approach.

Sagent incentivized the public to conserve water by promoting rebate programs and free services like leak repairs and water saving home inspections from a City water conservation specialist. The rebate programs were designed to give financial assistance to those who were interested in installing water saving alternatives in their home.

The Results.

  • The campaign efforts earned multiple national Environmental Protection Agency WaterSense Awards and several Wyland Foundation Mayor’s Challenge Awards.
  • The water conservation website SacWaterWise.com garnered a total of 141,420 sessions, 120,099 unique users, and 80,452 new users. The residential rebates web page received 20,732 visitors during the campaign period.
  • The Sacramento Department of Utilities Facebook page had a total reach of 166,520 with 68,046 engagements.
  • The number of Facebook followers increased by 15% from 5,346 to 6,157.
  • The campaign earned a total of 101.1 million impressions and 59% added media value.

The city of Sacramento’s goal of using less than 223 gallons per capita per day by 2020 was not only met—but surpassed.

By 2019, the city reported an all time low of 152 gallons per capita per day.
