The Challenge.
Sacramento Stormwater Quality Partnership faced challenges in keeping local bodies of water clear of pollutants, particularly stormwater pollution. This was largely due to the improper disposal of trash and litter that flows directly into storm drains in the wider Sacramento area. Stormwater would drain into these pipes and be carried to bodies of water, untreated. The SSQP was struggling to change public behaviors to protect these water sources.
Our Approach.
To inform residents of how they can make positive changes, Sagent created a series of campaigns beginning in 2010. At the heart of these campaigns is the Be River Friendly website, which acts as a central hub providing information and resources to Sacramento County residents. The aim was to encourage residents to take a few key actions to contribute to cleaner waterways.
The Results.
- Research into campaign results has shown a significant increase in positive behaviors since 2010. For example, since the “Some Jeepers are Keepers” campaign launched in 2014, Sacramento residents are twice as likely to not use any pesticides.
- 26% of residents reported that they don’t use any fertilizers in their gardens.
- 58% of residents always or usually use organic garden products.
